exploring hidden destinations

As you know, we love to travel and explore the different states here in the United States. Sure there are many different tourist attractions to choose from but our travel adventures aren’t just limited to that. We seek to find hidden gems and not-so-popular areas to explore and enjoy.

For well-visited places, you’ll get plenty of advice by simply searching for them online. You’ll find tips from other people who’ve been to that place. From the clothes, you need to prepare the best eats and additional precautions. But what if you like to explore more of the underexplored areas? How do you prepare for that kind of adventure? Here are a few tips:

Do your research

We mentioned earlier that you may not find a lot of tips about things to do and prepare when visiting a place that’s not always visited by tourists. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to research. This is the most important tip for exploring any kind of destination, whether it’s popular or not. When you’re looking up a place, go beyond the first page of your search results. Look for specific forums and see what others have to say about the place.

Talk to locals

This is one of the best ways to get an idea of what a place is really like and what there is to do there. Locals will be able to give you information that you can’t find online. They’ll also be able to tell you about any events that might be happening while you’re in town. Sometimes, what makes it a great place is that there aren’t a lot of tourists who know about it. However, locals are sure to have some idea about what it is and what activities you can best do.

Make a plan

After you’ve done your research and talked to some locals, it’s time to start putting together a plan. This doesn’t have to be a detailed plan, but it should include some of the things you want to see and do. You can always change your plans as you go, but it’s always good to have an idea of what you want to do. In that way, you are less likely to miss anything.

Pack appropriately

This is another important tip for any kind of travel, but it’s especially important when you’re exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations. Make sure you pack appropriate clothing and gear for the activities you want to do. If you’re going hiking, make sure you have the right shoes and clothes. If you’re going to be spending time in the water, make sure you have a bathing suit and sunscreen.

Be flexible

This ties in with the previous tip. When you’re exploring a place that’s not well-traveled, you should always be prepared for anything. That means being flexible with your plans and being open to new experiences. Who knows, you might find something even better than what you had planned!

Be prepared for anything

This is the most important tip of all. When you’re exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations, you never know what you’re going to get. Be prepared for anything and everything. Bring a first-aid kit, plenty of water, and snacks. And most importantly, don’t forget your sense of adventure!

Run by retired sisters Linda and Joanne Linda Norris, N-State is a driving and travel blog which details their 5 year journey to visit each and every one of the 50 states in the US (including Alaska and Hawaii of course). Not satisfied to just visit the tourist destinations, the Knight sisters take pains to visit the out-of-the-way places in each and every state.
